Top players benefit from the development programme in Soweto
There are currently 260 children in the SA Golf Development Board's (SAGDB's) programme in Central Gauteng. These players are all benefiting from the board's PGA-approved coaching programme and its commitment to creating opportunities for talented youngsters.
Four of the top players in the region are based in Soweto, where they receive coaching from development coach Freddie Mkwanazi. They also receive additional instruction from veteran SAGDB head coach Zac Mavundla.
18-year old Samukelo Sithole is currently the board's most promising player in the region. He plays off a scratch handicap.
At the Soweto Country Club, he plays with 14-year old Godfrey Mphaka, 16-year old Itumelong Ndaba, and 18-year old Israel Ndou. Their handicaps are 10, 8 and 11 respectively.
Not only have these players had the opportunity to benefit from a structured coaching programme, but they have also learnt the discipline and respect that golf instils. They have also had to learn to be responsible for their own actions on the course.
The SAGDB's programme is generously supported by the Central Gauteng Golf Union, which recently donated uniforms for the players. There is also growing support from clubs in the region, which provide use of their courses, help with transport to tournaments and often meals for the players.
With this ongoing assistance, the SAGDB hopes to nurture even more talent in this important region. |
