Hilton impresses in the Sanlam Challenge
The Sanlam Cancer Golf Challenge has been one of South Africa's leading amateur events for many years. Many of the players in the SA Golf Development Board (SAGDB) have competed in this event and a number of them have achieved notable success.
This year, Hilton Buys was one player who put in a strong performance. At his local club event in Oudtshoorn, Hilton carded a 75 off his five handicap to emerge as the club winner. Unfortunately he didn't play as well in the regional finals a month later, only managing a 79 gross for 38 stableford points at George Golf Club.
"Hilton has been with the SAGDB for five years and was our first provincial player in the Southern Cape," says the development board's manager for the region, Johan Erasmus. 'He has played for the Southern Cape at u/14 and u/16 level and is currently a member of the Oudtshoorn Golf Club's first league team."
The 17-year pupil from Morester Sekondere Skool is currently the leading SAGDB player in the region and is aiming for selection to the Southern Cape u/18 team next year.
About the SAGDB: Founded in 1999, the SA Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is the only body officially tasked with growing the game of golf in South Africa. The SAGDB is a non-profit organisation (with section 18A donations tax exemption status) and is fully endorsed by government and all of South Africa's official golfing bodies. Through its PGA-approved coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 3,500 children per week in ten regions. The SAGDB is sponsored by SAA, City Lodge, the Pro Shop, ProRange and ExpandaSign.
